Payson Trivia
| Payson is located in Gila County northeast of Phoenix
between Camp Verde and Show Low along Highway 87 near the East Verde River
and Tonto Creek. The population estimate for July 1, 1998 was 11,978, an
increase of 3,601 since 1990.

| The county seat of Gila County, Arizona, is Globe. The
county population on July 1, 1999, was 49,051, an increase of 8,835 over
the 1990 census.

| Gila County was created in 1881 from portions of Maricopa
and Pinal Counties, and later included part of Yavapai County. The county
covers 4,752 square miles. It is also a source of great mineral wealth.
Silver first attracted people to this area in the late 19th century.

| The U.S. Forest Service owns 56 % of the land in Gila
County. The Apache Indian Reservation makes up another 37 %. Individuals
and corporations own 3 % of the land, while the U.S. Bureau of Land
Management owns 2 %. That makes 97% of the land in Gila county
non-salable. In other words it can not be sold or purchased. The private
land is generally land that was settled on in early years and the
subdivisions are located where early homesteads once were.
